Situated between the two twin volcanoes, Sundoro-Sumbing and Merbabu-Merapi, Candi Borobudur is one of the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Java Island. This stunning Mahayana Buddhist moment was built during the ninth-century. A pyramidal base with six concentric square terraces, the upper three circular features a large stupa on top. The main stupa is surrounded by 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha.

The great temple's complex contains over 2,600 bas-reliefs, in both narrative and decorative panels. Some bas-reliefs have English-language explanation signs. Guides are also available. Contact the information centre at the main entrance.
